PUNCH Health Editor, Angela Onwuzoo, Wins Big!

Angela Onwuzoo, the Healthwise Editor at PUNCH, has been awarded the Lagos State Best Health Reporting award in the print category! This happened at the Universal Health Coverage Day Stakeholders Appreciation Awards. She beat out other top journalists to win this award. The organizers noted that Angela was chosen for her dedication to “health awareness and community well-being.”

Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, the Permanent Secretary of LASHMA, said that Angela’s work was crucial for advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC). She highlighted Angela’s passion and willingness to speak up on important issues, even contacting her directly about vulnerable patients needing help. This really shows how seriously Angela takes her job and the impact of her reporting.

Babatunde Titilola Honored by the ILO

Babatunde Titilola, a correspondent with PUNCH, received the Forced Labour Special Prize Award at the ILO’s Global Media Competition on Labour Migration. This is a huge international recognition! The ILO received more than 430 entries from 92 countries, with only five winners chosen. This award is particularly special as it recognizes reporting on forced labour and human trafficking, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Protocol to the Convention 29 on Forced Labour.

The Winning Story

Titilola won for his feature story titled “Harrowing tales of survivors trapped in the web of trafficking.” His piece detailed the heartbreaking stories of Nigerians caught in child trafficking. He showed how these innocent people are tricked into sexual exploitation and suffering with fake promises of a better life abroad.

Babatunde focuses on underreported stories of marginalized groups in Nigeria. He hopes his work will drive important discussions on the international stage. He said he’s motivated to keep writing about those whose stories often go unheard.

Why These Awards Matter

These awards highlight the important role of journalism. They show how reporting can bring attention to critical issues and improve society. These awards are not just a win for Angela and Babatunde but a win for the PUNCH and the Nigerian journalistic community.
