The Road to the World Cup 2026
The UEFA draw took place in Zurich, setting the stage for the European qualifiers. This will be the first World Cup with 48 teams, and Europe gets 16 spots. The draw divided teams into 12 groups. Some groups will have five teams, and others will have four. Only the group winners will automatically qualify, while the runners-up will fight for the remaining spots via playoffs. With England in pot one, the big question is can they make it? How about Wales in pot two, and Scotland, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland in pot three? It’s all to play for!
How the Draw Works
The 12 qualifying groups are split into six groups with five teams, and six groups with four teams each. Teams will play each other both at home and away. Only the top team from each group gets an automatic ticket to the World Cup finals. The runners-up will go into a playoff battle along with four teams with the best Nations League records to secure the last four European slots. Due to the Nations League quarterfinals that are yet to be played, the full draw couldn’t be completed today. For instance, Italy vs. Germany have been assigned to different kinds of groups (4 or 5 teams).
The qualifying matches will take place during five international breaks in 2025: March 21-25, June 6-10, September 4-9, October 9-14, and November 13-18.
Premier League Press Conferences
The Premier League weekend is almost here, and the managers are talking! Newcastle’s Eddie Howe and Liverpool’s Arne Slot have already spoken this morning. Later, we’ll hear from Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou, Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, and Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta. What will they have to say about their teams’ chances this weekend? Expect a lot of juicy updates!
Manchester City’s Finances: Good News, Bad News
Manchester City has announced record revenues for the past season, hitting £715 million. This was largely thanks to winning their fourth Premier League title. But here’s the kicker: their profits dropped from £80.4 million to £73.8 million. What’s the reason? A drop in broadcast income due to missing out on the Champions League final. They are also investing £300 million in expanding the north stand of the Etihad Stadium. City are also facing some heavy scrutiny with over 100 charges of financial rule breaches brought against them by the Premier League – these are of course denied by the club.
