The Katsina State Government has partnered with the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment to disburse N4.4 bn grants to 100 secondary schools in the state.

The event was held on Wednesday in GSSS Doro, Bindawa Local Government Area of the state.

The fund, which will be allocated towards the renovation of an additional 100 junior and senior secondary schools across the state as part of the ‘Large Grant – Phase II initiative,’ seeks to improve the quality of education and development in the state.

The state governor Dikko Radda, expressed his government’s commitment to improving the educational infrastructure in the state, adding that his administration will ensure that students are provided with a conducive learning environment.

This was disclosed in a Wednesday tweet by the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media, Isah Miqdad.

Also speaking, the Commissioner, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Hadiza Yaradua, said the N44 million given to each of the beneficial schools is aimed to address the challenges faced by many schools, such as dilapidated structures, lack of appropriate classroom furniture, and inadequate learning materials.

“She said the disbursement is the fourth of its kind, starting from small grants given to all 578 junior and senior secondary schools last year, large grant phase I given to 188 schools, mega grants given to 15 schools, and now the second phase of a large grant to 100 schools.

“She said the grant disbursement is used to upgrade and improve school infrastructure, including the renovation of classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and administrative blocks,” the tweet read in parts.

Also speaking, the state coordinator of AGILE, Dr. Mustapha Shehu, revealed that the collaboration between the Katsina government and AGILE highlights the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainable educational development.

He said the AGILE project is committed to improving education for all, with particular attention to the needs of adolescent girls.

He added that the intervention of the project has seen the construction of about 150 new secondary schools and recruited and trained no fewer than 2,000 teachers within two years.

The tweet further stated that the event was attended by the Chairman of Bindawa LGA, the District Head of Bindawa, traditional rulers and religious leaders, amongst others.

E-commerce platform, Jumia Technologies said it will discontinue its food delivery service, Jumia Food at the end of December.

The company will also shutter services across other operating countries including Nigeria, Kenya and Morocco, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Uganda, and Algeria.

Jumia CEO, Francis Dufay, said on Wednesday the company will now refocus on its core physical goods business and payment platform.

He stated, “The more we focus on our physical goods business, the more we realise that there is huge potential for Jumia to grow, with a path to profitability.

“We must take the right decision and fully focus our management, our teams, and our capital resources to go after this opportunity. In the current context, it means leaving a business line, which we believe does not offer the same upside potential – food delivery.”

The company further explained that a number of employees at Jumia Food will transition to the core physical goods segment

Their exit is coming after Bolt Food, another major player, also announced its withdrawal from Nigeria and South Africa, highlighting the harsh realities of the African food delivery landscape.

The Delta State Police Command has shared security tips with Nigerians on how to stay safe, urging them to adopt precautionary measures in the face of increasing insecurity across the country.

The command shared the tips in a post on its X account on Thursday.

In its advisory, the police urged Nigerians to avoid showing off, including other safety tips.

The tips include:

1. Schedule meetings between 8 am and 2 pm. Don’t leave too early and don’t be caught in the late hours.

2. Remove titles from your phone contacts. Eg: Hon, Alhaji, Chief, Inspector and military ranks in general.

3. While driving, focus on the road and ensure that every 5-7 minutes, there is traffic on the returning lane.

4. Try not to exceed 100km per hour so you can make your judgments timely. It will also help you look out for traps and appreciate the terrain.

5. If you can, please don’t use tinted sheets on your car. It passes a message to bandits and criminals that you are a VIP.

6. Make sure you always have a spare tyre, plug and fuel pump in your car. Don’t ignore this.

7. Even if you are not the one driving, put your phone away and keep your eyes on the road.

8. Moving in a convoy has proven not to always intimidate criminal elements. Choose your driving companions wisely.

9. If you must stop to buy food articles or ease yourself, it is advisable to take that break at a major town. Villages harbour criminal informants.

10. Fill up your tank well before you hit the road and top up only in major towns.

11. Approach checkpoints with caution; they could be traps. Most security outfits only patrol in vehicles on major highways.

12. These are safety tips. They will help tremendously, but cannot guarantee total protection from these elements.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, said it had become expedient to reposition the nation’s education policy to target the delivery of employable graduates.

The governor, who spoke at the opening  of the 67th National Council on Education meeting held in Lagos, called on stakeholders in the education sector to “work at ensuring self-reliant youths are produced through the state and national educational system.”

Represented by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, Sanwo-Olu said, “It has become expedient to reposition the education policy by making and implementing a strategy to deliver graduate students who will blend with the labour market demands.”

He added, “The theme of the NCE meeting, ‘Addressing the challenges of policy implementation: A panacea for the achievement of Education 2030 Agenda,’ is an avenue to co-create and collaborate towards enhancing quality of teaching and learning that would provide more refined educational models and proffer lasting solutions to the challenges of policy formulation in the education sector.”

Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Andrew Adejo, called on stakeholders in the education sector to build a system that delivers a strong foundation for lifelong learning and use education as a tool for national development.

Adejo, who was represented by the Director, Educational Planning and Research and Development in the ministry, Mrs Anigbogu Uju, said, “When policies that guide a nation are not implemented at the appropriate time, the consequences are backwardness, under-development, unemployment for graduates, poverty, insecurity, etc.

“However, to tackle the challenges of policy implementation, all hands must be on deck.”

The UN mission in Mali officially ended a 10-year deployment in the country on Monday, its spokesperson said, in a pullout ordered by Mali’s military leaders.

The  mission, known as MINUSMA, lowered the United Nations flag on its headquarters in the capital Bamako, its spokesperson Fatoumata Kaba told AFP.

The symbolic ceremony marks the official end of the mission, she said, even though some of the elements of it are still there.

A “liquidation phase” will take place after January 1, involving activities such as handing over remaining equipment to the authorities.

Mali’s ruling junta, which seized power in 2020, in June demanded the departure of the mission, deployed since 2013, despite being in the grip of jihadism and raging crises.

The withdrawal of the UN stabilisation mission, known as MINUSMA, has ignited fears that fighting will intensify between troops and armed factions for territorial control.

MINUSMA had for the past decade maintained around 15,000 soldiers and police in Mali. About 180 members have been killed in hostile acts.

As of Friday, more than 10,500 uniformed and civilian MINUSMA personnel had left Mali, out of a total of around 13,800 staff at the start of the withdrawal, the UN mission said on X, formerly Twitter.

Since being told to leave, MINUSMA has so far left 13 positions in Mali, and has yet to close sites in Gao and Timbuktu in the north.

Last week, the UN mission handed over the Mopti camp in the centre of Mali, one of the hotbeds of jihadist violence that has plagued the Sahel region for years.

The Mopti camp most recently housed peacekeepers from Bangladesh and Togo, and in the past, hosted Egyptian, Pakistani and Senegalese contingents.

The pullout went smoothly, unlike recent withdrawals in Mali’s volatile north which took place under fears of a military escalation between the army and rebel groups, Kaba told AFP.
