Plantain, we all know am! But it’s more than just what we dey chop. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, working with the National Horticulture Research Institute (NIHORT), has started this training. It’s all about showing our people how to make serious cash from plantain.
This training wasn’t just some small talk o! It was a full package, teaching people how to rapidly multiply plantain suckers, how to plant and manage their farms, and most importantly, how to turn plantain into other things that can make money. Things like plantain chips, flour, even plantain bread and wine! Yes, you heard right, plantain wine dey o!
What Did They Learn?
The training wasn’t just about the farming side of things. They also touched on the business aspect, how to keep records and how to sell the plantain and products. The main goal na to help our people, especially women and youths, to create wealth and get jobs by working with plantain. This makes sure we no dey rely on only one source of income!
The big oga of NIHORT, Prof. Attanda Mohammed Lawal, sent his rep, Dr. S.O.S. Akinyemi, to tell the trainees say this training is like a booster. It will help them to use new scientific methods and technologies in their plantain work.

He stressed how plantain na big deal for food security and a great way to make money. And not just small money o. With plantain, you can export it and get dollars. He even said that making money from plantain is possible in many ways: plantain sucker multiplication, plantain fruit production, and making plantain chips, flour, bread, biscuits, and even wine. Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who also came to the program, congratulated everyone and urged them to use what they learned to create wealth. He also mentioned that they should make good use of the starter kits they were given, so that they can be serious plantain business people.
