Gunmen attack Calabar Correctional Centre, kill officer

A group of unidentified gunmen carried out a brazen attack on the Afokang Correctional facility located in Calabar, Cross River State. In a tragic turn of events, the attack claimed the life of a Correctional Service officer.

 

The spokesperson of the State Command of the Correctional Service, Affanga Etim, confirmed the assault, shedding light on the harrowing incident. Etim, speaking to the press in Calabar on Thursday, provided crucial details about the attack, ensuring that no inmates managed to escape during the assault.

 

He recounted the events, stating, “When they came, they opened fire on the security team who also responded in like manner, and in the process, an Assistant Superintendent of Correction, ASC, was killed. No inmate escaped or was killed, as the attackers didn’t get close to the main facility.”

Etim also reassured the public, noting that additional armed personnel have been swiftly deployed to reinforce security at the facility. These measures were enacted promptly, ensuring that the situation remains under control.

 

 

The attack, unfortunately, led to collateral damage, as a mother and her six-year-old daughter fell victim to stray bullets during the assault, underlining the far-reaching consequences of such violent incidents.

In response to the gravity of the situation, the State Comptroller initiated an urgent meeting with his management team to assess the aftermath of the prison attack. The outcome of this crucial meeting is anticipated to provide further insights into the incident and the measures that will be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.
