The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert regarding a counterfeit batch of Meronem 1g injection currently in circulation, urging Nigerians, especially healthcare providers, to exercise caution.

According to Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Pfizer, the Marketing Authorization Holder (MAH), notified the agency of the suspicious batch. The alert highlighted issues such as the vial content failing to dissolve upon reconstitution, discrepancies in the crimp code compared to production documentation, and deviations from Pfizer’s specified production process.

Adeyeye emphasized the potential risks posed to patients by the use of the counterfeit product, as its quality and safety are not guaranteed. Meronem, an antibiotic used for treating skin and abdominal infections and meningitis in adults and children, requires careful scrutiny to ensure authenticity and physical integrity before purchase and administration.

Healthcare providers and patients are strongly advised to source medical products only from authorized and licensed suppliers. Adeyeye urged importers, wholesalers, and retailers to remain vigilant within the supply chain, discouraging the illegal importation, distribution, and sale of counterfeit Meronem 1g injection and other substandard medicinal products.

In the event that individuals come across the counterfeit product, they are instructed to cease its use immediately and submit it to the nearest NAFDAC office. The agency remains committed to ensuring the safety and authenticity of medical products within the Nigerian market.
