Today, in a historic moment, King Charles III delivered the first King’s Speech in over seven decades, paying a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The emotional homage echoed Queen Elizabeth’s sentiments when she first opened Parliament in 1952. This tradition, last observed during King George’s reign in 1950, had been dormant due to various circumstances.

In his address to the House of Lords, King Charles expressed his deep appreciation for Queen Elizabeth’s legacy and was accompanied by Queen Camilla. After the heartfelt tribute, he outlined the government’s policy program for the future. Key highlights included the normalization of whole life jail terms for serious offenders, measures to combat explicit image sharing without consent, a push for a “smoke-free generation,” and plans for new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea, among other policies.

King Charles III appeared in grand regalia, wearing the Imperial State Crown and a crimson Robe of State, arriving in the Diamond State Coach for the ceremony. Queen Camilla made her debut as a Queen consort, wearing her coronation gown. This historic occasion symbolizes a blend of tradition and modernity under King Charles III’s reign, shaping the United Kingdom’s future.
