Ogun- On Wednesday, chaos unfolded at Akute Bus Stop and Alagboole in Ogun State as a heated confrontation erupted between commercial motorcyclists (okada riders) and transport union tax collectors, commonly known as ‘Agberos.’ The source of the conflict was a dispute over an abrupt increase in ticket prices.

Eyewitnesses on the scene reported shuttered shops and damaged properties, with residents and traders hurriedly seeking safety. A stranded commuter named Garba expressed solidarity with the motorcyclists, arguing that doubling the ticket price from N700 to N1400 was unjustifiable, especially considering rising fuel costs. Garba stated, “This cannot continue; where will they get the money from?”

While unconfirmed reports hinted at a possible fatality, our correspondent on-site was unable to verify this claim. The Ogun State Police Command, represented by Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola, could neither confirm nor deny casualties. Odutola acknowledged property damage but stressed that the gathering was deemed illegal.

“They (motorcyclists) can express their concerns through peaceful protests or approach the police through their unions. This particular gathering is illegal,” emphasized Odutola. The situation remains tense as authorities assess the extent of the damage caused during the clash.
